During my journey back to the states, I had a layover at the capital of Madagascar - Antananarivo. I decided to get a taxi from the airport to explore the city a bit before my departure. I stopped at a restaurant and walked out on the patio to this awesome view of rice patties, houses, and hills.
This was the traditional fishing vessel used by locals in coastal Madagascar. The rectangular wooden structure attached to the top is used to balance the vessel and decrease the chances of turning over in turbulent waters. Many of the pirogues used sails made from attaching bags of rice together as can be seen on the pirogue in the background of this image.
