This young Vezo girl was always smiling and acting silly as is evident in this photograph.
While working as a marine biologist in Madagascar I would walk on the beach every evening after work was finished. Although the villagers and I could not speak each other's languages, we got to know one another quite well. I spent many evenings with this boy's family and was even lucky enough to break bread with them one of the nights before I returned home.
This large female green turtle was captured by turtle hunters. But, luckily for her and the rest of her population a conservation organization (Reef Doctor, UK) purchased and secured her release as can be seen here. She is being loaded onto a pirogue and was released offshore shortly after this image was taken.
